Hello! I hope you had a glorious Memorial Day weekend! I worked today, but don't feel too bad for me because I have Friday off instead. I had the whole office to myself, which was lovely, but in my loneliness I decided to step out into the fantastic New York City weather and treat myself to lunch - a raw lunch, to be precise. My first ever!
There is a new vegetarian restaurant near my office called Adelina, and they offer both raw and vegetarian menus. The cuisine is mostly Italian-inspired. So I figured I would give some classic spiralized zucchini a try and went with the raw zucchini primavera with cashew cream sauce.
Holy mountain of roughage! I believe the leaves were spinach, and I also found chunks of mushrooms, celery, tomatoes, bell peppers and some more squash.

Ok so I can't lie, it was SUPER bland. It tasted like...raw vegetables with cashew cream sauce. Thank God for the tomatoes and bell peppers, or else there would have been very little flavor at all. That said, it was kind of nice to appreciate the raw vegetables' own flavor, which I'm used to dressing up with whatever taste it is I'm craving at the time, but I couldn't resist sprinkling on some salt and pepper. I know! Throw me in the stocks!
I'm not going to give up on raw cuisine just because of one ho-hum meal - there were other items on the raw menu at Adelina that would have been a little zingier for sure. I will definitely need to be impressed a lot more than this to be convinced to eat raw more often, though, that much is for sure.
Raw desserts are another matter entirely, mind you. After seeing me admiring the raw treats behind the counter, the guy who rang up my lunch threw in a complimentary mulberry ball, which he described as sort of a truffle made with mulberries, walnuts and cacao. I split it in half so you could see all the awesome nuts 'n' guts.
It was rolled in unsweetened cocoa as well, which was a nice bitter contrast to the sweet berries inside. Delicious AND nutritious!
Though I wasn't blown away by my first-ever raw meal, I will say that I noticed a distinct difference in how I felt after eating. I'm often a little sleepy following lunch, and I know it's TMI, but maybe sometimes my tummy starts speaking a lil monologue too. None of that today. I felt light and alert, but quite satisfied that I'd eaten more than enough. (Did you SEE that portion of zucchini??? Yeah - all gone.)
And then I was hungry an hour later.
Vitatop to the rescue! Today's sample was the Fudgy Peanut Butter Chip, alongside a cup of my guilty-hydrogenated-oil-pleasure, instant French Vanilla Cafe.
I will take this opportunity to say that I am totally floored by how many people have entered the Vitatops giveaway (you have until tomorrow in case you haven't entered yet for some kooky reason), and there is HUGE interest in this flavor of Vitatop. I'm gonna have to be a lil Debbie Downer here and say it was NOT all-that-and-a-bag-of-potato-chips. So far, in the competition between chocolate flavored and fruit flavored Vitatops, it's 0-3 in favor of the fruity ones. The banana nut one was totally good. My French Vanilla Cafe came to the rescue, though, and the Fudgy PB Vitatop was infinitely better when dunked in artificially-flavored goodness. Baked goods + coffee for dunking = sweet sassy molassy that's good.
