Brain Fart

I had the ultimate room-clearer of brain farts this morning. I planned my whole day's menu around a product review and related giveaway (!) and proceeded to leave said product at home. I brought the rest of everything I needed at the office for breakfast, lunch AND an afternoon snack as usual, just not the flipping secret ingredient. Want to know the kicker? I had even put it in my tote bag last night so I would not do exactly what I did and leave it behind. How I managed to foil my own plan, I can't even begin to tell you. The only explanation is pre-coffee haze during the packing process, I guess!

Needless to say, I was beyond disgruntled when I discovered my mistake at breakfast time this morning. I almost shed a tear. Almost. With some quick improvisation, I salvaged what I had brought and made a meal out of it, but I will only grudgingly admit that it turned out freaking delicious in spite of myself.

I have rearranged the meal plan for tomorrow to make up for my mistake today, so I'mma hold off on telling you what's in that bowl 'til then. For now, consider it a preview/clue.

Just as I finished breakfast, as if on cue, what should arrive at the office but a sample of truffles from Vosges chocolate! We have used that company for client gifts, so one of my job's hazards is occasionally tasting chocolates. Rough, I know. What a timely surprise! And chocolate makes everything better, right?

Wrong. Chocolate does make everything better. Everything except blue cheese. And that, friends, is what was inside the truffle. @#$^@%!

I have gamely tried all of the Vosges chocolate flavor combos that have come my way, including the mind-blowing (Barcelona bar: deep milk chocolate, almond, sea salt), the exotic (Naga bar: deep milk chocolate, curry, coconut) and the wacky (Mo's Bacon bar: deep milk chocolate, salt, bacon [duh]). I consider myself one of Vosges's biggest fans. However, if anyone from Vosges is reading this, I will not hesitate to tell you that this truffle tasted like caca. I wanted to like it, but I have to advise that further production of this truffle flavor will only end in sadness. I'm just sayin'.

And now for a little backtrackadoodle, I did want to post yesterday's breakfast cookie, because I daresay it was the best one I've made yet. Alas, the shiznit gets busy sometimes, so please excuse the double-doodie breakfast post today.

The bestest brekfist:

  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup kamut puffs
  • 1/2 scoop+ vanilla protein powder
  • cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves
  • 2 tbsp PB2
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin
  • 1 tsp shredded coconut on top

This is basically a remix of this cookie from two weeks ago, but with the substitution of PB2 for the 1/2 tbsp of real PB and the subtraction of pumpkin butter. PERFECTAMUNDO. I have also made the discovery that I can pretty much replace half of the oats I want to use with kamut puffs for more volume but less calories while keeping the whole-grainy goodness alive. So far, I haven't noticed a difference in staying power, but that would be the one obvious disadvantage to that plan. Otherwise, this is a deal worth doing in my book!

Again, I recommend combining the "wet" ingredients first for this cookie (pumpkin & avo), reconstituting the PB2 in with that goo, and then slowly adding the dry stuff 'til well mixed. This was also the second breakfast in a row to feature PB2, and it worked out right nice. Not to give too much away, but by this time tomorrow, I will have had it every day for breakfast since it arrived Monday evening. :)

Last but not least, one more quick shout-out to Energy Kitchen. Lunch yesterday was a bowl of their vegetarian chili, which I ordered Monday along with the wrap in order to meet the delivery minimum, but I stuck the chili in the mini fridge to save for later.

I just wanted to say "two thumbs up!" Serious bean action going on here to make up for lack o' meat.

...I wonder if my subconscious helped me decide what to title this post...

I'm always game for weird food combinations, but I can't say that I'm surprised that the blue cheese and chocolate combo wasn't a winner. Hooray for creativity, but no thanks.

Bleu cheese is so wrong - a crime against humanity. Sounds more like an April Fool's joke than a real food!

Anonymous said... that breakfast cookie for real? I am freaking dying! Could you substitute more pumpkin for the avocado? I don't like it (I know - weird).
I love kamut puffs for that EXACT reason. They taste like ass on their own but mixed with other yums, they're perfect and so voluminous!

Erin - you can make the same breakfast cookie above and just leave the avo out. Its feelings won't be hurt, no worries. In that case though, I might or might not be tempted to add some extra nut butter (or applesauce!). I'm just saying. Maybe even some pumpkin butter if you have it and are feeling wacky.
