If you read last night's post (with the Whole Foods impulse hoard), you might recall that I mentioned trying one of the items in my breakfast this morning. Now for the big ingredient reveal: Living Harvest Hemp Protein!

Wait! Don't stop reading yet! If you're like me, the word "hemp" conjures visions of hakky sacks, canvas clothing, beanies and rancidsmellingImeanfragrant patchouli. However, Living Harvest was on sale at Whole Foods yesterday, so I figured that if ever I was going to take the plunge and try hemp protein, the time had come. The nutritional stats for hemp are very impressive, so I knew it would be worth it if I could get past any smell/texture issues.

The hemp protein powder comes in an "original" flavor (thuper thcary to me), a vanilla spice flavor and a chocolate chili flavor. I was indeed to scared to try unadulterated hemp, so I went for the vanilla flavor, being that a) I'm almost out of my Kashi vanilla powder and b) I wanted there to be at least some sweetener/flavoring to my hippie paste.

Because I'm starting the journey to Boston tonight straight from the office, I didn't want to have any of my normal 'bento' boxes with me to add dead weight to my baggage, so for breakfast this morning, I decided to use my last packet of Kashi Go Lean warm honey cinnamon oatmeal, along with the following to mix in during the last minute of microwaving:
  • 1/2 sliced banana
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened coconut
  • 1 tbsp sliced almonds
  • 2 tbsp vanilla hemp protein powder

All together now...

It was truly the ugliest oatmeal I have ever made in my brief 25 years on this planet. And I have made a lot of oatmeal. However, it was totally delish! VERY sweet on account of the oatmeal mix being sweetened already plus the addition of sweetened hemp protein, but it wasn't gross or anything. Overall, the bowl had a great flavor, so if you can get past the pukey green color of the hemp, I now officially recommend picking up a canister for your mix-in pleasure. It made my normally smooth (if oatmeal can be smooth) oatmeal a bit grainier, but I also could have used less powder. I was just going for maximum protein effect. Have a look at it next time you're in the store, but a few key selling points for me were the high fiber content as well as Omega-3 and Omega-6. It's not any higher in calories than regular old whey protein, though it doesn't pack quite as much protein, scoop for scoop. I was also interested to learn that it's a raw food, so you have to refrigerate it after opening (which, btw, was difficult for me...I stabbed my palm by accident in the process of prying the top off with an excessivly sharp knife...doi).

I will refrain from any further immature hemp/pot jokes, but you know I can't resist another Kashi review! Give me a break, I'll be away this weekend!

You have just been assaulted by a horrendous cell phone picture of Kashi's Pesto Pasta Primavera frozen entree. This was chosen as today's lunch for the same reasons as breakfast: disposable packaging.

I've had this dish many times before, and it's definitely one of my favorite Kashi meals. Vegetarian, intensely pesto-y and LOTS of veggies (not for pea-haters). My two complaints remain the same, as usual...tons of sodium and freaktastically garlicky. In favor of convenience and a balanced meal, though, it's a nice standby. And who doesn't need an occasional extra dose of pasta, anyway? I have Friday in my heart today, and my mental menu is calling to me to "fuggedaboutit." I fully intend on complying. Posts this weekend will likely be sporadic, if anything. We'll see!

Happy weekending. :)

I bought the vanilla spice flavor not too long ago, and it tasted like dirt. Maybe the plain vanilla is better? Damn.

I was just going to say that I heard that the hemp tastes like dirt. Hmm...maybe I heard that from HEAB. She is my go to resource ;)

I totally understand on the Kashi meals. I went prepackaged myself tonight.

Hemp protein does conjure up those thoughts, but I still want to try it! Yay for ugly (but tasty!) oats to start the day! :)
